Wintertime can present a multitude of wonderful things; snowshoeing, hayrides, and days by the fire among them. There is, though, a heightened possibility of things that could go wrong because of the extreme weather winter can bring. Home and auto insurance can help you if something goes wrong, but here at Coast Insurance, we believe strongly in preemptive solutions. So to celebrate the coming winter, and to help you and your family stay safe, here is what we suggest to get ready!
For Your Home:
Your home is your port in a winter storm. As such, it’s best to keep it safe. First, get your heating system ready. Do you have a fireplace and chimney? Reach out to an expert and have the chimney cleaned to avoid any issues throughout the cold months. If you’re on electric heat, run a test of your heaters now to make sure they work before you’re stuck with a cold house!
Bonus: Insulate your windows with plastic film insulation and stop your indoor heat from escaping through your windows!
For Your Yard:
Your yard at first glance is a safe space, but winter can work against you and cause some trouble if you’re not careful. Make sure your gutters are clean before winter hits. A backed-up gutter can cause leaks, which can sometimes mean having to replace your roof. While you’re checking the gutters, look at any trees and bushes that surround your property. Any that look like they may fall down in a strong winter storm should be handled by a professional.
Bonus: The fall is a great time to seed your yard. If it’s not too late in the year, you can get a headstart on a fantastic lawn for next summer!
For Your Vehicle:
Preemptive vehicle maintenance sometimes slips our minds. The changing of the seasons can be a great time to get a bunch done at once. Here in The Maritimes, winter tires are a necessity. When you’re getting your tires changed over, have your oil changed as well and save yourself a trip. While they’re doing that, have your windshield wipers replaced with a stronger set to help get through the ice and snow that will build up on your windshield.
Bonus: Keep an extra jug of windshield washer fluid in your trunk. The only thing worse than running out of washer fluid is not having any to replace it with.
